The work at the social center Vilnius Blessed J. Matulaitis revolves around professional social assistance, social initiatives, as well as community organizing. Such a variety of activities allows the Center to address an array of problems faced by individuals and groups, as well as simultaneously integrates them into the local community. They have three projects for which you can apply to. The first is the open community project that is dedicated to integrate and assist mentally challenged and disabled people and their families. The second is the day center is for children between 6 and 12 years old, who live in very pure material conditions, have emotional and behavior problems, have learning problems, and need psychological help. The third is “the spring-board” project that offers  assistance to young people (13 – 16 year old) encountering various difficulties at school, having behavior and emotional problems, psychological and life crises.

The project, with EI-ref  2010-LT-9, will start in September 2013 until August 2014, lasting 11 months. The deadline to apply is March 30, 2013.

Tasks:

  1. The open community project: As a volunteer, working closely with Lithuanian volunteers,  you will help to organize cultural events, create drama and/or music pieces and perform them, organize free time occupation activities for the clients, organize handicraft workshops for the clients, help take care of the garden, assist in making exhibitions from disabled people in the local community, organize weekend trips for disabled children and day care center.  You will evaluate the day daily with another worker.
  2. Day centers for children 6-12 years old:  You will spend time with the youngsters individually, help them do their homework, visit some events in the city with them, once every other month go with them to weekend trips in Lithuania, help organize some evenings or other events, help organize holiday camps, participate in the Big Brother’s/Sister’s program, help staff in administrative work.
  3. “The spring-board” project:  For this project they need volunteers who have experience of social work with youth with very strong motivation.  You will spend time with the youngsters individually, help them do their homework, visit some events in the city with them, once every other month go with them to weekend trips in Lithuania, help organize some evenings or other events, help organize holiday camps, participate in the Big Brother’s/Sister’s program, help staff in administrative work.

Project environment: The organisation is based in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania (750 000 inhabitants) just 20 minutes by bus from the city centre and 40 minutes by bus from main railway and couch station. You will live in a rented flat in Vilnius together with other volunteers.

Selection criteria: You need to be highly motivated to commit your time for the sake of helping the weaker members of society. Most importantly, you should not be afraid of the tartget group you are working with. You should be older than 18 years old. Moreover, if you fall under “youth with fewer opportunities”, this organization is able to provide the support needed.
